Are you ready to seize the moment and make progress towards your goals?
Every spring I feel a sense of renewal – an overwhelming desire to refresh everything in my life. The birds seems noisier, the plants are all waking up and the days seem brighter. But Spring only happens once a year. So how do we keep that sense of determination going all through the year?
And what if you have a thing that you have always wanted but just never got around to it? Something that you can’t shake off. A goal or dream that just won’t go away or a nagging question that you need to have the answer to?
Lets spend a few moments tackling the need to seize the moment.
Four Keys to Achieving your Goals
There are four key things to remember when it comes to getting something done. Something that you have been putting off anyway. Be warned that this is a hefty thought process to go through before you do something like dropping the kids off at school or bathing the dog!
The first pointer is simply to decide to start and take the first small step in the direction of your goals. This doesn’t need to be a huge gesture. You don’t need to invest large sums of money or do anything drastic here. Just make the decision to start and make one small adjustment, one little action that will take you in the right direction.
Even the smallest action is a start and start is what you need to do. That might sound over simplistic, but sometimes, simple is all you need.
If you remain unmoved and are still sat indecisive and stuck, you are probably still thinking things through, trying to decide if the “thing” you want can be done…right? We have become an international community of over-thinkers. Thinking has gone from being a necessity to something that leaves us inert and static.
Stop thinking and do something!
(I have to step in here and briefly point out that one must be mindful of genuine danger and risk. If your life or health are at risk if you do the thing your heart desires, then your mind is doing exactly what it should and stopping you from making a mistake that could harm you. If that is you – keep thinking!)
So we march ahead now on the clear understanding that your goals are safe and will not cause harm to you or anyone else. And I encourage you to take the first step. Don’t let your thoughts hold you back.
If this remains a challenge, and you are still unable to act, lets think about why that might be. Are you afraid of the future? Or maybe held back by the past?
The past is basically dust
It cannot be relived, it cannot be changed and it cannot hurt you in the present. Equally, the future is yet to happen. It cannot be predicted with total accuracy, it cannot be wholly controlled. All you have is the present moment. This single moment is the only small piece of time that you can make a difference to.
Letting go of the past and accepting the present is key to being productive and amazing in the present moment. So if the past is holding you back or the future scares you, try and isolate this single moment and make it the best it can be. A sequence of productive and amazing “present moments” will propel you towards your goals, I promise.
A Big Question Mark
And the final common barrier is not being totally sure what the “thing” that you want really is. Maybe its just a sense that there is something missing. This is much more common than you think. It is also extremely exhausting and limiting to a person’s sense of overall happiness.
Whilst it may feel frustrating to know what you want but have no idea where to start, it is even more frustrating when you have a deeply held belief that something is missing but no idea what that something might be!
There is hope though.
Often, the missing piece of of the puzzle becomes clear when we least expect it. Perhaps whilst watching something unfold on TV or in life. Maybe you’re reading a book or even a in conversation with someone. Anything can trigger that light bulb moment when your deepest desire becomes clear to you.
But that is a bit hit and miss frankly. And if, like me, you don’t have time to waste then it could be time to do something a bit more proactive. Time to get to the root of your sense of incompleteness.
If you want to fast-track the process and work out what it is that your life is missing, then consider talking to me. Coaching is the best way to focus in on the missing pieces and work out a plan to make those goals come true. It’s what I do. I do it all the time, I did it for myself and I know it can be done.
The moral of this article then?
Do it! Whatever “It” is – get it started! There is no better moment to start than right this very second. Take the first step and see what happens. After all, any action is better than no action at all.
