In 2011 a film was released called “We Bought a Zoo”. It was a lovely film but not one that stands out in the memory against some of the bigger blockbusters that followed it.
What does stand out though is a single line of dialogue. A line that has become famous in its own right.
“You know, sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage. Just literally 20 seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.”
20 seconds of insane courage. It doesn’t sound like much does it? And when you think about it, how much more courage do we honestly need when it comes to the big stuff?
If you are about to parachute jump from a plane, 20 seconds of courage will be enough to see you leap into the unknown.
In the age of technology it can take less than 20 seconds to connect with someone or something, agree to a message, send an email…you get the point right?
The reason that I love this concept though, is that it makes even the biggest, scariest things seem possible. Because in reality, you do only need 20 seconds of insane courage in order to commit to something, take the first step.
And the first step is always the scariest one…the one that requires you to be brave, to show faith in something. The first step is where the courage is most important.
I am studying for a degree for the first time in my life (I’m 43 as I write this). The idea of committing to years of study, on top of my job was scary. The concept of a student loan and thousands of pounds worth of debt was terrifying. But all it took for me to get to where I am now (studying between client sessions!) was 20 seconds of insane courage. Courage to click send on my application form. Courage to accept my place.
Now that I have started, I am rolling with it. It has a momentum all of its own and all I need to do is keep up. No more courage required because the courageous bit is done. And as it turns out, I am loving it! So my insane courage paid off.
And in all likelihood, your insane courage will pay off too. But in order to find out, you have to try. You have to take that first step.
So why not take a few minutes to have a think about what it is that you are putting off through fear. What one thing do you wish for more than anything and yet the only thing holding you back is you?
Once you know what it is, you have one more thing to do….
You need to find your 20 seconds of insane courage.
And if that feels like too much of a jump to make all on your own – or of you feel unsure what your dream or goal is but you know that there is something out there that you need to achieve, why not get in touch? If there is one thing that I know about after years of being too scared and then building myself a career helping others, it is supporting people to reach for the stars.
